Headteacher's Blog - October Half Term

7F Food Technology

This week in Food Technology we carved pumpkins. We designed these and then went to work in pairs, cutting out the shapes of the things we designed. We kept these in our Halloween themed classroom and kept them inside for a few days until they were ready to go outside. We then pulled these apart and put them in the forest for the animals to eat.

Breakfast Club News

This week in Breakfast Club, we served scrambled eggs — and they were a big hit with the pupils!

A big shout-out to Jesse, who helped Miss Hardy with washing up and drying the equipment. Thank you also to Ellie- Jay, Kyelan and Taylor for helping Mrs Taylor fold the tea towels, and to Kayla for emptying the dryer drawer of water. A special mention to Taylor for putting the milk away in the fridge throughout the week — great teamwork, everyone!

Breakfast Club has also been getting into the Halloween spirit, enjoying some spooky tunes and fun vibes. It was a lively morning with Harrison getting everyone up and dancing — and showing off some impressive moves too!

Well done to all the pupils who are becoming more confident in making their own breakfast and using the microwave to prepare their porridge, which has become a popular choice in the mornings.

After the half term, we will be visiting America — and for breakfast, we will be enjoying delicious hash browns!

The Breakfast Club staff would like to wish all our pupils a wonderful, relaxing break.

Cheerio for now!

Girls Club

This week at Girls Club, we enjoyed a lovely time together in a calm, sensory-based environment. We sat and ate together, creating our own bracelets, playing with kinetic sand, and engaging in mindfulness colouring. It was a fantastic way to relax and connect with one another!

Inspiring Careers Talk with Jess Churcher (PossAbilities) – A Huge Thank You from Samuel Laycock School

We were thrilled to welcome Jess Churcher to Samuel Laycock School as part of our ongoing Careers Job Chat series. Jess delivered two engaging and insightful talks about working for the charity PossAbilities to our Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 pupils, shining a spotlight on the rewarding world of social care.

Her presentations were not only informative but deeply inspiring. Jess spoke passionately about the many benefits of working in social care — from the flexibility it offers to the personal fulfilment that comes from helping others. She highlighted how social care careers often involve partnering with people who share similar interests, making the work both meaningful and enjoyable.

One of the most exciting aspects of Jess’s visit was her discussion around work experience opportunities. She explained how these experiences can be a valuable stepping stone toward future employment, giving our pupils a real sense of possibility and direction.

The school would like to extend a huge thank you to Jess for her time, energy, and enthusiasm. Her visit made a lasting impression on our students and helped open their eyes to the many paths available in the world of social care.

We look forward to welcoming more inspiring speakers like Jess in the future as we continue to support our pupils in exploring their career options.

Sports Club

We ended this half term with the pupils' favourite sport, dodgeball. After playing a few games, we ended the day with pupils versus staff, which of course the pupils loved. Getting the chance to throw dodgeballs at staff…who wouldn’t have loved that?!

We have played many sports this half term, with pupils getting a chance to play sports they may not normally play. All the staff would like to thank the pupils for making it so much fun.

CAFT trip

This week the year 7’s got to enjoy a fabulous trip to the Children’s Animal Farm Trust.

We spent the whole day outside!

We got to feed the farm animals such as the ducks, donkeys and goats. The staff told us lots of interesting facts about the farm animals.

We really enjoyed burning some energy off on the park area. Some of us found the courage to have a go on the zip wire and were thrilled when we had been on it!

We played football with our friends, used the swings and roundabout or just spent time with our friends in the sandpit.

After some lunch we then got to venture inside the spooky woods…

We screamed at the haunted forest before finding our way to the potion making station. We loved mixing the different potions to make our own special brew.

Along the winding paths we found the fire pit where we sat and toasted our own marshmallows and enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate.

Finally, we headed to the pirate’s ship to have some musical fun! Some of us enjoyed making music and some of us enjoyed singing our heads off on the karaoke!

Pupil comments:

“This was the best day ever!”

“I can’t believe I went on the zip thing, it was scary but fun!”

“I really enjoyed feeding all the animals.”

Final week of the first term.

It's hard to believe that we have come to the end of our first half term already, but what a fantastic final week we have had! In English, we explored Día de los Muertos, spent time writing postcards, and delved into setting and character descriptions. Each of us even created our own fiction stories, which we shared with the class—what a treat!

In Maths, we tackled some addition and subtraction problems, and I’d like to give a big well done to Maxx and Jackson for completing their end-of-unit assessment. Both boys have had an exceptional half term in Maths—keep up the brilliant work!

During our Living Skills sessions, we discussed how to stay safe now that the nights are getting darker. Everyone worked hard to create informative posters featuring top tips, which will be displayed around the school.

In PHSE, we focused on positive affirmations and explored how they can enhance our mental health.

A huge well done to Bobby for being our Achiever of the Week—well deserved! Also, a massive shout out to our bronze achievers who have worked exceptionally hard to gain 500 points. Congratulations to Bobby for winning our Design a Pumpkin competition—what a great picture!

A massive well done to Maxx for completing our class jigsaw! We’ve been working on it for a couple of weeks, and he managed to finish it all in just 30 minutes—what a superstar! As a new challenge, we’ve set Maxx up with a 500-piece jigsaw for the next half term. Can't wait to see how he tackles that!

I hope you all have a wonderful break. I’m already looking forward to next half term!
